Autism and Sensory Processing

What You’ll Learn

Understand what sensory processing is and how it shapes how we experience the world
Explore how sensory processing differences can affect attention, behaviour and wellbeing
Recognise common sensory challenges autistic people may face
Learn practical ways to support sensory needs in everyday environments

Sensory processing plays a huge role in how we experience and respond to the world around us, and for many autistic people, these experiences can be quite different. This course explores what sensory processing is, how differences in sensory perception can affect attention, behaviour, and wellbeing, and how you can offer meaningful support in everyday environments.

In this course, you’ll develop a clearer understanding of sensory processing and how it relates to autism. You’ll explore the ways sensory differences, such as sensitivity to noise, light, touch, or movement, can shape an autistic person’s experience and influence their focus, comfort, and overall wellbeing. You’ll also gain practical strategies to recognise and support sensory needs in your setting, helping to create calmer, more accessible, and inclusive environments.

What is Sensory Processing?

We’ll explore what sensory processing really means and how it helps us interpret and respond to the world around us.

This Impact of Sensory Processing Differences

This section looks at how sensory differences can influence attention, behaviour, and wellbeing, and why autistic people may experience sensory input in unique ways.
